meta-analysis in the Journal on School Educational Technology drew on 398 K–12 studies. It found that interactive learning significantly improves academic achievement (effect size g = 1.005). That distinction is significant in standards-aligned assessment design. Recall-based questions do not produce the same cognitive demand. 

  1. Specific, immediate feedback

Feedback that explains why an answer is correct closes the gap at the point of learning. Flagging right or wrong provides no instructional value on its own. Specificity is what supports self-correction. That distinction matters for both formative and summative design. 

  1. Reduced cognitive load per interaction

Modules that introduce multiple new concepts in a single activity undermine engagement. Chunked, focused interactions produce better outcomes. This is a layout and sequencing decision. It has direct impact on how much students retain after a session.
